Re: Trying to lose weight by running

My case may be a bit extreme, but here goes...

In April of 2013, when I started running yet again, I was somewhere north of 250 pounds (how far north I'll never know as I was too afraid to get on the scale), and I'm only 5' 8".  In the past I would follow "conventional wisdom" and run no more than three to four times per week, and after a while, I'd get hurt and have to stop running.  This time around I reasoned that since I was always getting hurt right about the time I started feeling faster, I was going to work up to running every day, which kept me so darned tired I couldn't go very fast during any given workout; it worked.  In prior years, I'd never managed more than 700 miles before I had to quit running; since last April I've lost over 60 pounds and have run just over 3,000 miles without any significant injuries.

I told you to tell you this, as your fitness increases, and as you add to the distance and/or speed of your running workouts, your body will burn more calories, eventually reaching the point where your normal diet will not be enough to maintain your weight.  Between April and October of last year I ate pretty much like I'd eaten before April, and then a funny thing happened, I started getting faint from hunger.  That's about when I switched to the, "If it ain't nailed down, I eat it diet."  Yes, my weight loss slowed to a virtual stop, however, I've continued getting smaller and smaller (as evidence by the belt I threw out a few months back and the now three belt notches I'm now skipping in my new belt).

If your body needs to eat, eat.
